There are days we carry with us through life. The ones we circle on calendars, return to in photographs, and remember long after the little details have faded.
First steps, new beginnings, accomplishments and graduations. Meeting someone who changes our life. Saying “yes.” Welcoming our children into the world.
In those moments, we rarely know everything that will follow. On our wedding day, we make promises with the understanding we have then. Life gives those promises meaning over time.
Today is our wedding anniversary, and I find myself thinking about everything between that day and this one. The ordinary mornings, the unexpected turns, the laughter, and the conversations we didn’t know how to have until we had to.
You know that feeling when you decide to go for a run? Not the one you can’t wait to start, but the one you have to talk yourself into, knowing you’ll probably feel better afterward.
You start slowly, perhaps still looking for an excuse to stop—even as you keep going. Then you take a deep breath and give it a chance. By the time you’re done, the world looks a little brighter. Most of the time. And you feel proud that you showed up.
Sometimes marriage feels like that. I don’t mean the start or the finish. I mean everything in between: the rocky stretches, the unexpected hills, the sudden rain we certainly didn’t order.
We don’t always meet those moments gracefully. Sometimes we complain. Sometimes one of us needs to slow down, and the other needs to notice. But when we choose to face them together, we build a kind of endurance. We learn how to find our pace, when to pause, and how to help each other keep going.
There is so much an anniversary photograph cannot show. What it took to understand each other a little better.
The apologies that were difficult to say. The small gestures that arrived at just the right moment. And the humor that sometimes helped more than another serious conversation.
The imperfect days belong to our story, alongside the beautiful ones.
We are still learning what it means to love each other as the people we are now, with all that life has changed in us.
Happy anniversary to us—and to our imperfect tango of love, still learning the steps as we go.
